What Is Health Coaching?

Your Guide On The Side

It’s good to have someone walk alongside you and support you in making healthy behavior changes. With the support of a Health and Wellness Coach you can:

  • Step out in self-discovery

  • Uncover your motivators

  • Create systems of accountability

  • Generate solutions for lasting changes connected with your personal values

Your personal Health and Wellness Coach will:

  • Honor your uniqueness

  • Believe that you are an expert in your own life

  • Support your capacity for change

For some people, this could be baby steps to change, and for others, it could be huge leaps. Sometimes it’s a two-steps-forward, one-step-back dance to build your confidence to lasting change.

It's proven that clients who are actively engaged in their own care and decision-making are much more successful in making lasting changes. As they say, you have to have some skin in the game!

This is very different from the medical model of care in which a doctor or nutritionist provides a care plan for a patient to follow.

Health and Wellness Coaches do not diagnose or tell clients what to do.

Oftentimes, Health and Wellness Coaches work with physicians as part of a care team. This doctor-coach team supports patients in attaining doctor-recommended behavioral changes that could help manage weight loss, prevent type 2 diabetes, stop smoking, or navigate a healthy diet or lifestyle change due to a medical diagnosis or doctor advisement.

Health and Wellness Coaches also work independently with clients to support them in uncovering and creating better ways to manage the stress from home and work environments, incorporating physical exercise, attaining a healthier weight, making wellness changes for disease avoidance, devising a plan to make a life change, finding more joy, or even just learning how to live, cook and eat healthier.

Sometimes a health and wellness coaching session is a little like unpacking a bag and going through each piece to see if it's working for you.

Let’s suppose your goal is to feel healthier and have more energy, yet you find it challenging to break the habit of eating junk food.

For example, perhaps you often crave potato chips when you get home from work.  Consider this thought…maybe your craving is less about the chips and more about stress since chips are quick and easy and give you a sense of comfort after a long workday. Awareness and uncovering the need for comfort might be your key to opening the door to change, finding your strengths, and finally succeeding at reaching your goal. We might be unaware of what’s holding us back, but working with a coach might just help you uncover what’s happening beneath the surface.

In a coaching session, you will be in a purely judgment-free zone. If it matters to you, it matters to me. Everything spoken in a coaching session is completely confidential and within HIPAA guidelines. You can trust the process and be open to the change.
